Not all carbs are created equal

I have had clients in recent days tell me they are trying to drop carbs altogether and/or reduce their carb intake. All good and well if that is what works best for your body (everyone is different - I can eat a loaf of bread a day and not put on weight). But it is a pointless endeavour if you are still consuming refined sugar and other processed foods containing hydrogenated fats and preservatives (just about anything in a packet), and/or alcohol. As well as adding calories, these prevent you losing weight because they cause cellular inflammation, to which your body responds by holding onto fat as a defence mechanism. These nasties also contribute to a wide range of longer term health problems. So give those things up first, or at least try to reduce your consumption of them before you decide you have to stop eating fresh fruit and natural wholegrain products such as bread (Brumby's Bellbowrie add no sugar to their bread) and pasta. Below is an article I saw providing some alternatives for those struggling to give up sugar and other unhealthy snacks. Personally, when I get cravings for the chocolate chip cookies in the pantry and the like I instead reach for a handful of berries or nuts. Both can be expensive but there will usually be some in season which are affordable. Local strawberries are in season now, and raspberries can be got for a reasonable price.
